Participating

Get involved! You are critical to the success of our club!

Our club runs on the efforts of our volunteer board members, coaches and parents and we need your help. There are so many ways in which you can get involved and help out, ensuring that our club can continue to operate and have fun at the same time.

Below are just some of roles that need to be filled.

Practices:

  • Getting mats ready before practice, pushing mats onto the ice, taking mats off at the end of practice.
  • Filling water buckets during 2nd and 3rd hour practices (H2O engineers).
  • Taking a group for Badge Night testing (some skating experience required).
  • Helping out in one of a variety of capacities for club mini-meets (see below).

Skate Sharpening:

If you know how to sharpen skates and have the equipment, you can help lighten the load for our equipment manager by taking some skates home to sharpen between practices. If you would like to learn how to sharpen skates, you can learn and help sharpen skates at the same time during practice sessions. See our Equipment Manager for more information.

Board Meetings

Board meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month in the Schmaltz room at Kitchener City Hall. All members are welcome to come and attend these meetings. Check our Schedule page for dates and times.

Meets and Mini-meets

Running meets takes a tremendous number of volunteers and there are many roles that need to be filled. Trained Officials are needed for every OSSA sanctioned meet. These official roles include:

  • Meet Coordinator
  • Referee
  • Starter
  • Lap Recorder
  • Judge
  • Timer
  • Recorder (office)
  • Track Steward
  • Heat Box Clerk and
  • Announcer.

If you are interested in learning one of these roles, please email info@kwspeedskating.com for more information.

In addition to Officials, there are many roles that need to be filled by club volunteers for meets hosted by our club. Our club is hosting the Provincial A Championships this year, the weekend of March 5-6th 2016, and we need all of our club members to pitch in.

Roles to be filled at our meet include:

  • Track Stewards
  • H2O Engineers (filling water buckets)
  • Timers
  • Line Judges
  • Clerks
  • Result Runners and Posters
  • Kitchen Help
  • Food Donation
  • Track Marking and
  • Mat Setup and Takedown.

Sign up boards are in the rink at every practice by the table, posted on the wall. Be sure to sign up, or alternatively you can email info@kwspeedskating.com for more information.
